The Tour de France is one of the three Grand Tours in cycling. Held annually each July in France, it consists of 21 day-long stages over 23 days. The race occasionally passes through nearby countries with the route changing every year.
Organized since 1903, the Tour de France is currently run by Amaury Sport Organisation. The race is held each year since 1903, with the exception during the years of the two World Wars. Even though the route changes every year, the format stays the same. It starts on the mountain roads in the Alps and Pyrenees and finishes on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. Currently, the race runs 23 days in July, with 21 day-long segments.
Between 20 and 22 teams take part each year in the Tour de France. Eight riders from each team are fighting for the trophy. The race alternates between flat races and time trials, with each rider’s time timed to the finish. All the times are compounded with previous stage times, with the rider with lowest cumulative finishing times being the leader of the race and the wearer of the famous yellow jersey. That doesn’t mean he’s the champion, though.
Jacque Anquetil, the legendary Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain, and Bernard Hinault are the most successful Tour de France winners. They all have 5 wins each, with Chris Froome one title shy of their record. Froome last won the race in 2017 and will be looking to get that elusive fifth title this year.
Tour de France 2019 Betting and Odds Preview
Last year, Froome’s compatriot Geraint Thomas won the Tour de France. Froome was third last year, but he’ll surely try to win the race this year. With the race close, bookies have already started offering Tour de France odds with familiar names among the top favourites.
Event Date: July 6-28 2019
Chris Froome Eyeing a Record Fifth Title
It’s fair to say that British cyclist Chris Froome is one of the legends in the sport. He has won the Tour de France four times and has trophies from the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana as well. That’s before we include the numerous wins in many stage races. The 33-year old currently rides for Team Sky and is widely considered one of the best stage racing riders of all time.
Last year, Froome only managed to get the third spot behind Tom Dumoulin and Geraint Thomas. It was one of his two podium appearances on the Tour de France. Froome was a big favourite to repeat his 2017 success but eventually lost to his compatriot Thomas.
This year, Froome is back as the main favourite for the 2019 edition of the Tour de France. He’s leading the list with odds of 23/20 at Fun88, Ole777, and 10Bet. He’s ahead of last year’s winner Geraint Thomas and second-placed Tom Dumoulin, and even experts are considering Froome to equal Merckx record.
Froome’s odds may not be ideal, but at 23/20, you can still double your money should he put the yellow jersey on at the end of July.
Can Geraint Thomas Win Once Again?
Geraint Thomas surprisingly won last year’s Tour de France. With no success in other major Grand Tours, Thomas took the lead in the second high mountain stage and held it until the end. He became the first Welsh rider to win the general classification at the Tour de France and continued Team Sky’s dominance in the past 7 years.
Geraint Thomas raced his way to victory over favourites such as Froome, Sagan (who won the points classification), and Julian Alaphilippe. This year, Thomas has been beaten to the top favourite spot by his compatriot Chris Froome, although some experts think that he should be the main favourite.
Thomas goes for 11/4 at Fun88, and 10Bet, not that far behind Froome. There’s genuine belief among many cycling experts that Thomas may win the Tour de France this year as well, eventually if pressure for a fifth title gets to Froome.
If you believe that Geraint Thomas has what it takes to win such a grueling race for the second time in a row, you can earn almost 4 times in return for a reasonable bet.
Time for Tom Dumoulin to Shine?
Twenty-eight-year-old Belgian cyclist Tom Dumoulin is one of the biggest stars in cycling right now. Known as a great time-trialist, Dumoulin won the general classification in the Giro d’Italia in 2017. Although he has struggled to repeat the same in other Grand Tour events, he won individual stages in the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana as well. Last year, he finished right behind Geraint Thomas and ahead of Chris Froome, and this year he made the top 3 bookie favourite list again.
Tom Dumoulin has been given odds of 21/4 at Ole777, Fun88, and 10Bet to win the 2019 Tour de France. Experts fully believe that Dumoulin will make things hard for Froome and Thomas, and with a bit of luck, he may even win the race.
There’s no question that Dumoulin has the quality to win the Tour de France. He’s younger than both Thomas and Froome, and thanks to his amazing time-trial abilities, he’ll wear the yellow jersey sooner or later. If you think it’ll happen this year, Dumoulin’s odds will bring you a great return.
Can Richie Porte Win His First Grand Tour?
Australian rider Richie Porte never had any major success in the Grand Tours. He won one individual stage at the Tour de France last year and won the young rider classification at the Giro d’Italia back in 2010. Apart from those wins, he never won a Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana. Still, he’s considered a dangerous opponent who can win a place on the podium or even win a Grand Tour event with a bit of luck.
For the 2019 Tour de France, Porte has been given odds of 31/4 at Ole777, Fun88, and 10Bet. Those odds don’t make Porte a major favourite, but should Froome, Thomas, and Dumoulin fail to perform at their best, expect Richie Porte to mount a title challenge.
The Australian rider is an excellent time-trialist and has the quality to win. Place a bet on him, and you’ll win a great return if Porte dons the yellow jersey at the end of the race.
Tour De Frace Stage 14 is a 181.5km run from Blagnac to Rodez, a transition stage that takes the race into the challenging terrain of France’s Massif Central. TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 14 BETTING PREVIEW
The stage begins on mostly flat roads, but the final 100km offer a steady series of hills and valleys, including two Category 3 ascents. The journey to Rodez will challenge riders with steep climbs with the last 570m averaging 9.6%. The route looks too hard for pure sprinters, so we expect puncheurs to fight for the stage win, given that the GC teams will most likely sit tight tomorrow in anticipation of the Alpes..Those hoping for a breakaway win might not be too optimistic about their chances as riders such as Michael Matthews and Greg van Avermaet - took his first Tour stage win at Rodez in 2015 - are both winless and suit the profile.
If there is another sprinter with a chance here, that is John Degenkolb. On his best day, he could have no problems on this kind of routes and could be in the mix.
Philippe Gilbert and Dan Martin both eager to capitalise on their good form and Edvald Boasson Hagen is worth keeping an eye on as well as the Norwegian has shown he has good legs in a couple of bunch sprints, challenging Marcel Kittel many times.
Steve Cummings sat in the 'gruppetto' in stage 13, preserving his legs for this stage while Lilian Calmejane has already won a similar stage at this year's Tour and can make the 'double'.
Mikel Landa was superb on Thursday's stage and now he is very close to the top 3 in the GC. As a result, the Spaniard will be more controlled from now
Michael Albasini has been very quiet so far. He has a decent record in the punchy classics races – including this season. The finale here looks great for him but his form is 'questionable'.
Another rider with good chances is

Fabio Felline. The Italian is decent on the types of climbs that feature on stage 14 and he is a good finisher too. We can't rule out Diego Ulissi, but he could be a bit tired after yesterday's effort on the first two ascents. The Italian contingent can also count on Sonny Colbrelli and Alberto Bettiol. The latter - as well as Team Sky's Michal Kwiatkowski - could be used only to support his captain Rigoberto Uran.Dark horses?
