The Bee's Purpose

Our purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

A tradition 90 years in the making

Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, just as millions of other students have done before them.

The National Spelling Bee has not one - but 8 champions The cancellation is a disappointment for the spellers who qualified, but also for the people who were looking forward to watching it at. National Geographic offers other ways to connect with other students. We encourage you to join our global community of young people who are exploring connections, thinking critically, collaborating globally, and seeking solutions to help protect our planet. After taking a year off due to the c-o-r-o-n-a-v-i-r-u-s p-a-n-d-e-m-i-c, the Scripps National Spelling Bee will get buzzing again this spring/summer, leading to an in-person championship to air.

The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Little did they know that 90 years later their literacy effort would reach 11 million students each year.

The Scripps Cup, the Bee's national championship trophy, was designed by Rookwood Potteryin Cincinnati, Ohio, and introduced in 2019. This grand award, inspired by the competition's history, embodies the ideals of Bee.
